Greenwell Springs is an area of Central, Louisiana, United States, a city in the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. It was previously distinct unincorporated community in East Baton Rouge Parish. The ZIP code for this area is 70739. During the Civil War, the area was used as a headquarters and staging area by Confederate General John Breckinridge. It is the home of former Louisiana State Senator Gaston Gerald, a farmer/rancher in Baton Rouge and Washington Parishes. The community is currently served by the Central Community School System, including Bellingrath Hills Elementary School (PreK-Kindergarten), Tanglewood Elementary School, Central Intermediate School (grades 3-5), Central Middle School (grades 6-8), and Central High School (9-12). BellingRath Hills is within Greenwell Springs, and is under the Roman Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge. A private Catholic K-8 school, St. Alphonsus Catholic School, is in Greenwell springs, and was established in 1963 as a grade 1-4 school, its initial enrollment was 131. History
Greenwell Springs is the primary city name, but also Greenwel Spgs are acceptable city names or spellings. In the 1850s, Robert W. Greenwell purchased land in the area of what is now known as Greenwell Springs. He began developing the area into a rural resort that was built around 10 medicinal springs. During the Civil War, the resort was used as a headquarters and staging area by Confederate General John Breckinridge. After the war, the springs stopped flowing and the hotel was closed down. In 1920, the State of Louisiana bought the hotel and used it as a mental hospital. In 2005, the unincorporated community of Greenwell Spring became part of the newly incorporated city of Central, Louisiana. Former State Representative Clif Richardson resides in the town and is a member of the Central Parish Board of Commissioners for the City and Parish of Central. He is the son of former State Senator Gaston Gerald, who served in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1969-1974. He was the chairman of the Louisiana State Senate from 1973-1974 and served as the chairman from 1978-1980. He currently lives in Baton Rouge with his wife and their two children. The couple have three children, a son, a daughter and a son-in-law who all live in the same town, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as well as a son and a daughter-in law who live in New Orleans. The town is home to the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, which was founded in 1858. The University of Lafayette is located on the banks of the Mississippi River and was the site of the Battle of Port Hudson.

The area was once known as "BellingRath" because of the large number of residents living in the area. It was also called "Greenwell Springs" because it was located near the town's main water supply. The name was changed to "Blingrath" in the 1970s. The town is now known as 'BlingRath' because it is located in the middle of a hilltop area with many undeveloped acres. It has a population of about 2,000.
