History

Settled in 1704 and incorporated in 1778, the town of Foxborough was named for Charles James Fox, a Whig member of Parliament and a staunch supporter of the Colonies in the years leading up to the American Revolution. The town was once home to the world's largest straw hat factory, which burned to the ground in the early 20th century. Foxboro Stadium opened in 1971 as the home of the New England Patriots, after the football team spent its first eleven seasons playing at various stadiums in Boston. The stadium lapsed into bankruptcy and was then bought by paper magnate Robert Kraft, who then bought the Patriots outright. The Patriot Place shopping plaza, built on land surrounding the stadium bought by Kraft, completed construction in 2009. The plaza includes a variety of restaurants, clothing stores, and other retailers. The New England Revolution, one of the charter clubs of Major League Soccer, was founded by Kraft in 1996. Gillette Stadium, opened in 2002 as a replacement for Foxborough Stadium, and is located on the site of the former home of Schaefer Stadium. The Patriots won the Super Bowl in 2004, and the Superbowl XLIX XLIX XXXVI was in 2006. The Super Bowl XLVII XLVII was in 2010, and was the first Super Bowl to be held in the city of Boston since it was founded in 1967. The game was played in Boston's Fenway Park, which is now home to Boston's Wrigley Field and the Boston Red Sox. It was the last Super Bowl held in Boston before it moved to New York City.
