Mt. Juliet was formed in 1835 and incorporated as a city in 1972. The official city charter has the name listed as Mt. Juliet; however, the United States Postal Service lists its name as Mount Juliet. The most widely accepted theory regarding the naming of the town is that it is named for the Mount Juliet Estate, a manor house in County Kilkenny, Ireland. As of the 2020 United States census, Mount Juliet has a population of approximately 39,289 people. The city has claimed to be the "fastest-growing city in Tennessee," and it does qualify for this distinction considering growth from 2000 to 2015 for Tennessee cities with a population over 10,000. In recent years, Thompsons Station in Williamson County and Spring Hill in Williamson county have grown by a larger percentage. In 2010, there were 23,671 people, 8,562 households, and 6,674 families residing in the city. In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.68% under the age of 18, and 8.75% ages 65 and over. The median income was $70,102, and the median age was 52 years of age. The total area is 1.99% water, with 16.6 square miles (43 km²) of land and 0.3 sq miles (0.78 km 2) of water. The population was 86.92% White, 6.70% Black or African American, 2.47% Asian, 0.44% Native American, 1.42% from other races, and 2.00% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origins were 3.32% of the population.
History
Mount Juliet is the primary city name, but also Mt Juliet are acceptable city names or spellings. Mt. Juliet was formed in 1835 and incorporated as a city in 1972. The most widely accepted theory regarding the naming of the town is that it is named for the Mount Juliet Estate, a manor house in County Kilkenny, Ireland. It is the only U.S. city with this name. On March 3, 2020, an EF3 tornado destroyed hundreds of homes, along with West Wilson Middle School and Stoner Creek Elementary. Five people were killed by the tornado, three of which were in Mt. Juliet. It was the deadliest tornado to hit the state since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. It also was the first tornado to strike the state in more than a decade. The tornado caused the deaths of five people, including three children, and damaged hundreds of houses. It caused the death toll to reach more than 100, including two children who were in the same school as the elementary school where the tornado struck. The town is located in the eastern part of the state, about 30 miles from the state capital of Knoxville. It has a population of about 2,000 people. The city is located on the Cumberland River, which flows into the Tennessee River. The Tennessee River runs through the town and into the Mississippi River. It runs into the eastern end of the Tennessee Valley, where it meets the Tennessee-Tennessee border. The river runs through Mount Juliet, which is located about 20 miles from Knoxville, and is known as one of the most scenic towns in the United States.

Recent annexations along the east side of South Rutland Road as well as a land swap with the City of Lebanon for the Bel Air at Beckwith project have increased the city's geographical area to approximately 21.78 square miles. The total area is 1.99% water. The city is located between Old Hickory Lake to its north and Percy Priest lake to its south, both of which are man-made reservoirs. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the population of Mt. Juliet in 2010 was 2,816. The population of the city in 2010 is 2,715. It is estimated that the city will reach 3,000 by the end of the year. Mt. Juliet has five elected leaders: four commissioners elected by district and a mayor elected at-large. All five officials serve four-year terms, and are officially part-time employees. The commission selects and appoints a city manager, who is employed full-time and runs the city's business on a day-to-day basis. As of 2019, Mt. Juliet is in Tennessee's 6th congressional district. The city is the anchor city for Tennessee House of Representatives District 57 (Rep. Susan Lynn-R) and Tennessee Senate District 17 (Sen. Mt. Juliet's public schools are operated by the Wilson County School District. Most of Mt. Juliet is zoned to Mt.Juliet High School. The northwestern portion of the city is zoning to Green Hill High School, while areas south of I-40 are zoned. Mount Juliet Christian Academy is in Mount Juliet.
Transportation
Interstate 40 and U.S. Route 70 (Lebanon Road) run east/west through Mt. Juliet. State Route 171 (Mt Juliet Road) runs north-to-south connecting US-70 to I-40, before continuing toward Interstate 24 in the Antioch area. Nashville International Airport is located 9 miles (14 km) west of the city via Interstate 40. The city is a stop on the Music City Star commuter rail service from Nashville to Lebanon, operating over freight carrier Nashville and Eastern Railroad. The Music City star also runs trains for Tennessee Titans games, New Year's Eve, Wilson County Fair, and other events downtown Nashville. For commercial air traffic, Mt.Juliet contains Nashville International airport, located 9mile (14km) west from the city through Interstate 40, which has two exits in the city. It is the only airport in the state that has a direct connection to the rest of the country through I- 40. It has a single runway, which is used for commercial air travel. The airport is located near the intersection of Interstate 40 and I-70, and also serves as a staging area for the Tennessee Titans and Nashville Predators football games. It also has a heliport for air travel to and from other cities in the region. It was the first airport in Tennessee to be built in the 20th century, and was completed in the early 1950s. It opened in the 1960s, and is located in the heart of Nashville's downtown area.
City services
The City of Mt. Juliet operates a police department. Ambulance service are provided by WEMA (the Wilson Emergency Management Agency) The city has a combination career and volunteer Fire Department (MJFD) with one station on Belinda Parkway and another station on Hill Street. An additional 57 acres were recently added to enhance Mt. Juliets park system, as well as an 8 acre tract of land dedicated to youth soccer. Baseball and softball are run by Mt.Juliet League, Inc. and basketball is run by the West Wilson Basketball Association. In December 2008, the Mt. Julie Police Department Animal Control Division opened a shelter on Industrial Drive. The city also has a police station near Charlie Daniels Park on the city's northwest side, and a fire station on the north side of the city, next to the new Green Hill High School. It is currently in the planning stages to build a third fire station near the new high school, on the east side of Mt Juliet. It has a number of youth sports programs, including football, cheerleading, and basketball. It also has an adult day care center, which is open to the public, and an adult night club, which offers a variety of activities, such as bowling, billiards, and darts. The town has a library, which has a computer lab, and several other community centers, including a bowling alley and a senior center. The library is located on the west side of town, and the senior center is on the south side.
