De Pere was the site of a polyglot settlement of several thousand attracted by the fishing at the first rapids of the Fox River. In 1671 French Jesuit explorer Père Claude-Jean Allouez founded the St. Francis Xavier Mission at the last set of rapids. De Pere is located at 44°2646N 88°427W (44.4460910, 88.0740510). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.30 square miles (31.86 km²) De Pere has several areas on the National Register of Historic Places. St. Norbert College, which abuts the banks of theFox River on the city's west side, was founded by Norbertine Abbot Pennings in 1898. The city is part of the Green Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 25,410 according to the 2020 Census. The current mayor of De Pere, Michael Schmitz, is a former mayor of Green Bay, Wisconsin, who was elected in 2010. The mayor is the son of former mayor and current governor of Wisconsin, Paul Schmitzer. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the state of Wisconsin in the Wisconsin Supreme Court case that the state should have the right to sue the federal government for $1.2 billion in damages. The case was settled in the Supreme Court in 2010, and the decision was later overturned on appeal. The Supreme Court also ruled that the city should not have had to pay the $1 million fine.

History

De Pere is the primary city name, but also Ashwaubenon, Hobart are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is De Pere, Wisconsin. In 1671 French Jesuit explorer Père Claude-Jean Allouez founded the St. Francis Xavier Mission at the last set of rapids on the Fox River. In 1837, a popular vote established De Pere as the county seat of Brown County. De Pere was incorporated as a village on March 6, 1857. St. Norbert College was founded by Norbertine Abbot Pennings in 1898. The De Pere Lock and Dam Historic District (#9300-1331) was added in 1993. North Broadway Street Historic District is listed as #8300-3368. Large homes line Broadway, Ridgeway Blvd., Morris, Fulton, Franklin, Cass, Front, and Wisconsin Streets near the Fox river. The Mansion Street World War II Defense Housing Historic District and the Daviswood Ranch Homes Historic District were added to the list in 2021. The Edwin and Jennie Gutknecht House was listed in 2015. The Union Hotel was added toThe National Register of Historic Places in 2003. The City of De Pere has several areas on the National Register Of Historic Places. The city's first European visitor was Jean Nicolet, who visited the place in 1634-1635. Geography

De Pere is located at 44°2646N 88°427W (44.4460910, 88.0740510).According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.30 square miles (31.86 km²) of which 11.58 sq mi (29.99 sq km) is land and 0.72sq mi (1.86sq km) of water. The city is located in the Piedmont region of the Rocky Mountains. The town has a population of 2,816. It is the second largest city in the state of New Mexico, after La Guardia, after the town of LaGuardia. De Pere is home to the University of Wisconsin-La Guardia and the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, which was founded in 1883. The University of California, San Diego has a chapter of De Pere's College of Medicine, which opened in 1894. It was the first college of its kind to open in the United States, and the second to open a branch in New Mexico in 1891. It has been the location of the National Weather Service since 1894, when it opened its first office in De Pere, New Mexico. It also has a branch of the American Museum of Natural History, which is based in the town's downtown area. The U.N. World Heritage Site is in the De Pere section of the city, which has been designated as a National Register of Historic Places.

De Pere has a mayor-council form of government with a full-time city administrator. The mayor is elected. The city council consists of eight alderpersons, two elected from each of four districts. All elected officials serve two-year terms. De Pere is represented by Mike Gallagher (R) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and by Ron Johnson (R), Tammy Baldwin (D), and André Jacque in the Wisconsin State Senate. Shae Sortwell (R, D) represents De Pere in theWisconsin State Assembly. The town is located on the Wisconsin River, which flows through the town of De Pere and into the city of Waukesha, which is in the state of Wisconsin. It has a population of about 2,000 people, with the majority of its residents living in the town center and the northern part of the town's downtown area. It is home to the University of Wisconsin-De Pere, which has an enrollment of about 1,500 people, and the Wisconsin College of Applied Sciences and Technology, which offers classes in business, nursing, and other fields. It also has a college of business and technology, which provides a range of services to the community. It was the site of the Wisconsin National Guard during the Second World War, and was the birthplace of the University of Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin Extension of the Wisconsin State University. It is also home to a number of small businesses, including the De Pere Chamber of Commerce, which was founded in 1883.

De Pere is served by two school districts. It is also home to St. Norbert College, a private Roman Catholic liberal arts college. Syble Hopp is a school for children ages 321 years old who have cognitive and other developmental disabilities. De Pere Private Schools: Notre Dame of De Pere, Our Lady of Lourdes, Phantom Knight Charter School, De Pere Preparatory School, St. Paul's School of the Sacred Heart, and St. Peter's School for the Performing Arts, are among the private schools in De Pere. The town is located in Brown County, New Jersey, on the shores of Lake De Pere and the shore of the Red River. The city has a population of about 2,000 people. The population of West De Pere is about 1,000. The school district has a total of 12 schools. The district is home to two high schools and two middle schools. It also has a middle school and an elementary school. The high school is located on the town's eastern edge. Transportation

Interstate 41 travels northsouth on the west side of De Pere. Wisconsin Highway 32/Wisconsin Highway 57 enter De Pere from the south. The Fox River is navigable for boat and canoe traffic with the exception of a dam. There is limited transit service operated by Green Bay Metro and the CN provides freight railroad service.
